Laurence Grove is a professor of text image studies at the University of Glasgow in Scotland. This semester, he’s teaching as a scholar in residence at the Center for Comic Studies alongside Frank Quietly, who’s worked on things such as Superman and Batman. Comics may not be the first thing that come to mind when thinking about the environment, but Grove's line of work has a unique and important connection to sustainability: eco-comics.

Laurence Grove
“Eco-comics can spotlight what we can do for the environment”

The intersection between comics and the environment creates an avenue for raising awareness about important topics such as sustainability. Grove highlighted the eco-comics he’s seen in France and explained how they convey messages that support sustainable habits in everyday life, whether its recycling, sustainable transportation, or even portraying broader messages in terms of global politics. The reason these comics have worked is because they take difficult topics and make them readable and more approachable.

“It’s not about doing silly comics… it’s about using images which strike people, which draw them in, and which then get a serious message across”

Being from Scotland, Grove believes sustainability is more ingrained in his daily life compared to U.S. culture. The overall sense of sustainability in Europe is more widespread, with a general mindset that everyone should care about the environment because everyone lives with it. In all, Grove believes sustainability is common sense. With that being said, he would love to bring eco-comics to the San Diego area and spread awareness about environmental topics.

The Office of Energy and Sustainability is grateful for Laurence Grove's contributions to the SDSU community and his strides to spread awareness about sustainability!
