Kelly Hansen is currently the lead electrician for Facility Services at San Diego State University, where he collaborates with the Office of Energy and Sustainability through his work with meters. Measuring energy and water consumption across campus is crucial to sustainability—after all, you can’t manage what you don’t measure.

Sustainability origin story: Hansen is originally from Michigan but moved to Southern California after being stationed here for the Navy. Since moving here, he has gained years of experience in the electrical field where he found his passion for sustainability and has been able to make a large impact through his career. As lead electrician at his previous employer, Hansen realized people were treating energy like a given rather than a commodity. However, as prices increased, it was made evident that energy must be conserved. This is when he stepped in to determine strategies to save the company both expenses and energy. He’s been working in this field of sustainability for over 20 years now.

Hansen’s work now focuses on maintaining and monitoring the several hundred meters across the SDSU main campus. Without his meter expertise, our campus would be unaware of how much energy and water is being consumed and how to implement sustainable, energy-saving techniques. He also plays a key role in the planning stages of new buildings on campus to ensure they all have efficient meters.

In the coming years, he hopes to implement new, faster technologies in the meters across campus to more accurately and efficiently measure consumption. The Office of Energy and Sustainability greatly values Hansen’s work as he has significantly contributed to the sustainability of our campus!
