Have you ever wondered how the San Diego State University campus stays so beautiful? The campus community has Kandyce Hajosy’s team to thank for the pristine landscaping and cleanliness that define our campus. As SDSU’s Manager of Landscape and Fleet for Facilities Services, she works with her team to ensure our campus is clean, aesthetically pleasing, and sustainable.

Hajosy is originally from California but grew up in Indiana, where the plants are lush and green. Her passion for nature and green spaces stemmed from the environment she grew up in, ultimately inspiring her to become an arborist. That passion and love for plants and trees continues to guide her through her career today.

176 tons of compost = 7 loaded garbage trucks
Hajosy supervises her team of 32 who manage waste streams and maintain landscaping across campus. Sustainability is incorporated into everything they do, whether it's using less chemicals or switching to electric tools. Since joining SDSU, Hajosy has helped decrease pesticide use by 50 to 60 percent through sustainable practices such as mulching. Her team also plays a key role in keeping campus spotless by cleaning up after large events such as commencement, or ensuring parking garages are kept clean. Though their work often happens behind the scenes, their impact is clear: in the past fiscal year alone, the team diverted more than 176 tons of organic waste from landfills!

Looking ahead, Hajosy is eager to expand sustainability efforts on campus. One project she’s especially proud of is a proposed plan to make Campanile Walkway greener and more inviting. She plans to plant water-efficient trees and plants in place of water-guzzling grass, and implement comfortable chairs and tables for students to relax or study. She also looks forward to collaborating with the A.S. Sustainability Commission, Green Love, on replacing labor-intensive and soccer ball-popping plants with native trees at the ENS 700 Field.

The SDSU community deeply appreciates Kandyce Hajosy’s dedication to keeping our campus beautiful and sustainable. Next time you admire the landscaping on campus, take a moment to appreciate the work of Hajosy and her hardworking team!
