Ever wonder where SDSU’s heat, electricity, and hot water come from? Bobby Webb and his team at the Cogeneration Plant work behind the scenes to keep campus running efficiently, safely, and sustainably.
Bobby is the Supervisor of the Cogeneration Plant, where he oversees the plant’s daily operations, maintenance, and the team that is responsible for ensuring the campus has reliable power and steam every single day. Bobby and his team work hard to keep SDSU running smoothly, providing energy that supports every classroom, office, and residence hall on campus.
Sustainability plays a key role in the daily operations of the Cogeneration Plant. Bobby and his team continuously maintain and upgrade equipment to ensure the plant operates as efficiently as possible. By keeping the engines that generate electricity in optimal condition through routine maintenance and regular cleaning, they reduce energy waste, lower emissions, and improve overall performance. These efforts also help conserve resources and reduce operating costs on campus.
Bobby has always had a strong passion for efficient operations. It began during his more than 20 years of service in the U.S. Navy, where he worked in naval engineering. There, he gained extensive experience in preventative maintenance and equipment lifecycle management. Those skills made for a perfect transition into his role at SDSU, where he continues to apply these principles to ensure that the plant runs smoothly.
Although Bobby enjoys the technical aspects of his work, it’s the people around him who make coming to work every day truly worthwhile. He emphasizes the importance of working together as a team to accomplish the shared mission.
“Nobody works for me, they work with me. Therefore we work together and we’re all a team. It’s two ways,” Bobby says.
Bobby and his team are a vital part of the SDSU community.
“We’re the lifeblood of the campus. If things don’t go right in our space, then the whole campus can be dark,” Bobby says.
Looking forward, Bobby is focused on improving the plant’s cooling towers to increase their efficiency. These upgrades will help reduce energy consumption, improve performance, and support sustainability goals at SDSU.
While much of their work happens behind the scenes, Bobby and his team play an essential role that should not go unnoticed which keeps SDSU running smoothly, safely, and sustainably every single day.
