Olivia DeVito
Olivia DeVito is a second year at San Diego State University studying Sustainability with a Minor in Ecology. She is currently serving as the transportation chair for Green Love through Associated Students along with being a member of Epsilon Eta, a eco-centered fraternity.
Olivia is from Laguna Hills, California. With her love for sustainability and protecting the earth, this year she decided to take a leadership position within green love. Her and her co-chair Wesley run and facilitate the Transportation Committee, organizing transit socials, outreach, and more.
Sustainability Origin Story: "When I came to SDSU, I was actually undecided on my major. I had always loved being outdoors, and I traveled a lot growing up. I also loved biology and natural sciences, so I knew I wanted to do something of that sort. A big reason why I ended up pursuing sustainability was because of the problems I noticed in my own community and the lack of discussion about them. No one in my life growing up really cared about environmental issues and didn’t know much about how they could live sustainably, and I wanted to fix that."
Advice: I remember one of my professors joking that sustainability students are the most depressed students. I know what they mean - it can be very draining to sit in a classroom and be told about topics like climate change and habitat destruction. But I think it’s important to have hope and remember that just because we can’t fix it overnight, doesn’t mean that your actions don’t matter. Anyone can integrate sustainability into their lives, and there are so many ways you can make a difference in your own respective field. If we all make an effort to learn and change our behaviors, we can enact real, positive change.
Though only a sophomore, Olivia has made a great change in her community. She encourages others to get involved and join groups like Green Love, Epsilon Eta, Greeks Gone Green, Alt Protein Project, and more. Check out her committees page on Green Loves instagram.
