SDSU to Increase Renewable Power in 2011
San Diego State’s colors may be red and black, but the campus continues to go green.
This year, SDSU plans to increase the renewable power installed on campus by more than 200 percent, according to the Physical Plant. Photovoltaics systems, which convert solar radiation into direct current electricity, are currently located on the Aquaplex, Children’s Center, Extended Studies, Music Building, Physics Building, Parking Structure 1, Parking Structure 2 and West Commons.
More PVs will be installed on the Aztec Recreation Center and Parking Structure 1 this year. The additional installations will add 340 kW capacity to Parking Structure 1 and 250 kW capacity to the ARC, which will increase SDSU's PV capacity by 200 percent, according to the Physical Plant. PV installations are also planned for Storm and Nasatir halls.

SDSUs Aztec Farms is Breaking Ground--Visitor Day Feb 11th
Aztec Farms is non-profit, 100% organic, student-worked and partially student-managed, working farm founded by SDSU professor Dr. David Larom in 2010. The project is dedicated to research and education on sustainable local agriculture issues.
Aztec Farms kickoff visitor day is Friday, February 11. For those who want to carpool, meet SDSU students and visitors by the ticket machines at SDSU's Parking Lot W at 8:15 AM and bring a vehicle if you have one. If you cannot carpool, you can meet the group at Santa Margarita at 930 AM. Work is optional. In general, Fridays will be visitor/intern work days at the farm. SDSU students and community volunteers did so much great work last season, and we welcome you back! For Directions e-mail David Larom at dlarom@mail.sdsu.edu.

SDSU Book Rental Program: A Success for Students and the Environment
As of spring 2011 the San Diego State University book store reports that 60% of students now utilize a new and innovative book rental program, which has saved students an estimated $2.5 million in 2010-11. The program lowers the cost of higher education by reducing overall book costs for students up to 40% and reduces SDSU's carbon footprint by reusing text books rather than creating a demand for new books. While other campuses have book rental programs, SDSU's program is unique in that it has been recognized and funded FIPSE and incorporates a research program that studies the impact of rentals on student's academic success. The program is supported by a $1.1 million from the Department of Education Fund for Innovation in Post Secondary Education (FIPSE) grant SDSU received in 2010 to study whether rentals allow students to acquire more materials and what the impact is on their academic performance.
